How to write a tattoo prompt that works

A prompt that produces a usable design has three parts: the style, the subject, and the instruction “white background”. Skipping the third one is the most common mistake. Without it the model tends to render the tattoo on an arm in a photo, which looks impressive and is useless when you want to hand the design to an artist.

So instead of “snake tattoo”, write “fine line snake tattoo design coiled around a dagger, thin black linework, white background”. The style word decides everything about the line weight and shading, the subject decides the composition, and the background instruction keeps it as flat art.

Generate three or four versions of the same prompt before you change the wording. Diffusion models give a different composition every run, and the second or third one is often the keeper. When you do edit, change one thing at a time: swap “thin black linework” for “bold outlines” and you get a completely different school of tattooing from the same subject.

Styles this generator handles well, and two it does not

Type the style name at the front of the prompt. These all render cleanly: fine line, blackwork, dotwork and mandala, American traditional (bold outlines, flat color), neo traditional, Japanese or irezumi, black and grey realism, watercolor, minimalist single line, and ornamental patterns.

Two things it is genuinely bad at. Lettering and script come out as letter-shaped nonsense, because text rendering is still a weak point of diffusion models in general; generate the artwork here and have your artist set the words. And it will not generate recognizable real people, including tattoo portraits of a specific person, so a photo-based memorial portrait is out of scope.

Picking the shape that matches the placement

The aspect ratio buttons decide the shape of the canvas, and the right one depends on where the tattoo is going. 1:1 suits standalone flash for a forearm, shoulder or calf and is the default here. 9:16 matches long vertical placements: spine, outer forearm, the front of a thigh. 16:9 works for pieces that run across the collarbone or under the shoulder blades.

Downloads come out at 1024 pixels on the long edge. That is plenty for showing an artist on a phone or printing an A5 reference, and it is worth knowing that no artist tattoos a JPG directly anyway. They redraw it as a stencil that fits your body.

Taking an AI design to a tattoo artist

Bring the design as a reference, not as a finished plan. Artists expect to redraw it, and the good ones will spot problems the model cannot: lines that converge into mush at small sizes, shading that will spread and blur after a few years, a composition that fights the curve of your arm.

Two practical notes. Fine line work under about five centimeters loses the detail the model drew, so either size up or ask for a simplified version. And we do not export vector files or stencil outlines, only the flat image, so your artist will trace their own line drawing from it.

If you want to see the scale before the appointment, print the design at the real size and tape it to the spot. That is the same trick artists use with stencil paper, and it tells you more than any on-screen preview.
